One of the most common overseas jobs that people think about undertaking is teaching English as a foreign language. After all, they are to know the basics of the English language and probably have at a minimum a four year university education.

Another benefit of a teaching English as a foreign language job is that employment can be found almost anywhere, although the largest chunk of English teaching jobs are in East Asia, the Middle East, and some south and central American countries.

The government also offers English training centers in overseas classrooms, and the United States government also funds a large number of programs that will hire these professionals. The Department of Defense is one branch of the United States government which hires overseas English teachers, as well as the United States Department of State in their private embassies.

The Office of English Language Programs is a program that is offered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which offers high quality English language programs across the world, mostly sponsored by embassies and consulates.

The United States Agency for International Development helps develop the educational systems of countries, which also includes teaching English overseas. Candidates have to have fairly high qualifications such as a graduates degree in education or a related field, and overseas experience is helpful to obtaining such a competitive ELF position.

Two years experience is also required in order to become a member of U.S. aid, and those are chosen usually start out as interns, eventually earning job tenure after about five years of employment abroad.
